There was a spell of exceptionally mild weather over the New Year, with the UK recording both its warmest New Year's Eve and New Year's Day on record. Northern Scotland and north-east England were worst affected. Storms Malik and Corrie arrived in quick succession and brought damaging north-westerly winds. Two rare red warnings for wind were issued for storm Eunice, the most severe and damaging storm to affect England and Wales since February 2014.
